NZSE Openness Statement

The New Zealand Society of Endocrinology (NZSE) does not directly conduct or oversee animal-based research or teaching. However, our membership includes both clinical endocrinologists and biomedical researchers, some of whom are directly involved in animal research as part of their professional roles within universities, research institutes, and healthcare organisations.

As a professional society, NZSE is committed to promoting the highest ethical and welfare standards in animal research and teaching. We expect all members involved in animal research to adhere strictly to their host institution’s approved animal use protocols, the Animal Welfare Act 1999, and relevant national guidelines, including those of ANZCCART (the Australian and New Zealand Council for the Care of Animals in Research and Teaching).

NZSE recognises the important contribution that animal research has made, and continues to make, to the advancement of modern medicine, including the understanding, prevention, and treatment of endocrine and metabolic diseases. Such research must always be undertaken responsibly, ethically, and transparently, with respect for animal welfare and societal values.

NZSE is a signatory to the ANZCCART Openness Agreement on Animal Research and Teaching in New Zealand, which reflects our commitment to openness, accountability, and public engagement. Through this agreement, NZSE supports the following five commitments:

  • Commitment 1: We will be clear about why and how animals are used in research and teaching.
  • Commitment 2: We will enhance our communications with the media and the public about the use of animals in research and teaching.
  • Commitment 3: We will enhance our communications with tangata whenua about the use of animals in research and teaching.
  • Commitment 4: We will be proactive in providing opportunities for the public to learn about research and teaching involving animals.
  • Commitment 5: We will report on progress annually and share experiences to support continuous improvement.

Through these commitments, NZSE aims to foster trust, understanding, and informed dialogue about animal research, while supporting ethical scientific practice and the advancement of human and animal health.
